The South Side comes alive every summer with culture, music, food, and community. Here’s your guide to the best fests happening in the neighborhood this

season.

June kicks off summer festival season on the South Side with Real Men Cook® for Charity, a Chicago Father’s Day tradition for thirty-seven years, and usually ends with the African Festival of the Arts, Labor Day weekend. However, this year the Obama Presidential Center’s celebrations expanded the Juneteenth focus and hopefully brought new interest and fun. The festivals continue through September.

Jazz’n On the Steps

Sunday, July 26, 2026 / St. Moses the Black Parish

Featuring 2 Brown Sisters – Maggie and Africa Brown. 

The South Side Jazz Coalition presents Jazz’n on the Steps. The South Side Jazz Coalition ‘SSJC” was founded in 2015 to continue the legacy of Chicago tenor saxophonist Earl LaVon Freeman’s free weekly jazz jam, which ran for over 40 years and gave South Side musicians, young and old, local and international a place to gather and share music. The SSJC endeavors to create safe cultural spaces by cultivating partnerships with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, St. Moses The Black Parish, and the Chicago Jazz Institute.

Black Woman’s Expo July 31 – August 2/ McCormick Place/ Obama Presidential Center

For 31 years, the Black Women’s Expo has been a place where Black women connect, create, inspire and make an impact. Join BWe for a weekend filled with powerful conversations, culture business, entertainment and community, culminating in the 2026 BWe Phenomenal Woman Awards Reception at the Obama Presidential Center.

Bud Billiken Parade & Festival August 8, 2026, | 39th & MLK Drive to Washington Park

The Bud Billiken Back to School Parade and Festival is an inspiring celebration designed to get South Side children excited about returning to school. This historic parade features high school bands, drumlines, rope jumpers, dance troupes, floats, and more in a dazzling promenade, followed by a festival in Washington Park. Dancers perform in sync at this, the largest Black parade in the country.

South Shore Summer Festival

August 16, 2026, | South Shore Cultural Center

The 12th Annual South Shore Summer Fest takes place at the South Shore Cultural Center on August 16, 2026, providing a day for the community to network while enjoying the soulful sounds of national and local musical artists. The festival also gives attendees the opportunity to shop on the shore and enjoy favorite neighborhood foods.

The Future of Film starts at the premier XL Film Fest featuring four days of networking, education and dealmaking. The XL Film Fest connects talent with development opportunities, industry leaders, distribution partners, investors and cultural institutions.

Black & Bronze: A Bronzeville Music Fest — Honoring the Legacy of the Black Metropolis August 29, 2026 – Lillian Hardin Armstrong Park 4433 S. St. Lawrence Ave.

Bronzeville’s influence on Black America is impossible to overstate. During the Great Migration, it became one of the nation’s greatest centers of Black business, culture, journalism and music.

Black & Bronze celebrates that enduring legacy through live performances, wellness activities, community organizations and local entrepreneurs. More than a festival, it is a reminder that Bronzeville’s greatest resource has always been its people—and that honoring the past helps inspire the future.

African Festival of the Arts

Labor Day Weekend / | Washington Park

Africa International House USA presents the Annual African Festival of the Arts in Washington Park, anchored near the Obama Presidential Library and the South Side museum district (Sunken Garden of the DuSable Museum). The festival stands as one of Chicago’s largest neighborhood festivals and the nation’s largest Labor Day Weekend celebration of Black global cultures, bringing the art, sights, tastes, sounds, and spirituality of African Diaspora cultures to Chicago in a replicated African village.

African/Caribbean International Festival of Life September 25-27, 2026, | Washington Park

Cultural celebrations take center stage at this Washington Park festival dedicated to the music, cuisine, and traditions of African and Caribbean nations. This festival has been a Chicago tradition for more than 30 years. The 33rd annual event features performers across multiple stages, with the lineup still being announced.

Hyde Park Jazz Festival September 26-27, 2026, | Hyde Park

Every fall, this free festival celebrates the roots of Chicago-style jazz with diverse artist lineups on outdoor and indoor stages throughout Hyde Park. With deep South Side roots, this festival draws jazz lovers from across the city for a weekend that honors Chicago’s musical legacy.
