We’ve all heard the old adage, your health is your wealth. When it comes to the Southside of Chicago, this year, entire Black neighborhoods are in line for a real treasure trove of the most senior instructor of Kemetic Yoga in the United States. Yasir shares this bit of wisdom with us: “The damage done to the inner psyche of people of African descent is too deep and profound to not intentionally seek resurrection and spiritual reconstruction in anything but the traditions of our ancestors.  If these traditions are the light of the world and core of everything else that came later then we have no choice but to return the source and honor ourselves.”

What Is Kemetic Yoga™?

Kemetic Yoga™ is the ancient Egyptian system of Yoga enlightenment based upon the practices of physical movements combined with controlled deep breathing and meditation. The modern version of this ancient system was developed from primary research conducted by Dr. Asar Hapi and Master Yirser Ra Hotep (Elvrid Lawrence) of Chicago during the 1970s. Kemetic Yoga™ is a healing and regenerative Yoga system that is characterized by a series of geometrically progressive postures that create alignment of the spinal column and correct defects in the skeletal muscular system in order to relieve stress, increase blood circulation, and nutrient and oxygen supply to vital body systems. Yasir explains “the word Yoga literally means control. When we do not have control over our thoughts and behaviors, we become unhappy and out of balance.” Once we incorporate the principals of Kemetic Yoga™ into our daily lives, not only do we learn how to control our thoughts and relaxation techniques, but we train our bodies not to respond to stress or stressful situations.” That is where the healing begins not just on an individual level but for the community as a whole.
Then there’s Julia Perkins, owner/instructor of Studio Yogi opening Spring of 2022 in South Shore.
Studio Yogi will be at 1840 E. 71 Street, Chicago Illinois 60649, under the umbrella of Urban Core Inc (UCI). UCI’s mission and commitment is to inspire a healthier South Shore community. UCI is managing a small well-ness hub that encourages residents to adopt healthier ways of life. One of the anchor storefronts, will be Studio Yogi. Construction at UCI/Studio began in November and will be completed by the end of April, 2022.

In addition to body flexibility, the benefits of yoga have been proven to improve stress reduction, depression and anxiety disorder. Yoga is also being used in behavioral therapy for help with smoking cessation as well as substance abuse and alcohol abuse.

Julia’s plan to open her studio began after being diagnosed with osteoporosis in her mid 40’s. She immediately began searching for a practice that would challenge her without causing further damage. She says, “Yoga became a real game changer for me, but unfortunately, I had to travel outside of my South Shore community for classes.” “Why,” she thought, “can’t we have a yoga studio right here in the neighborhood?”. Julia tells us her ”why” became clear, and Studio Yogi was born.”
At Studio Yogi, Julia strongly advocates the importance of “creating an atmosphere of understanding and appreciation for different body types and abilities in our classes, and thus creating a truly inclusive yoga class that allows us to first meet our students where they are.” “I have encountered so many people who believe yoga is only for those folks who are already agile and possess an innate sense of movement. But I know for sure that that isn’t true. I am always modifying poses. I struggle with many postures due to my physical challenges. What is most important to understand is that yoga embraces the fact that no one body is the same: no one body possesses the same range of motion, no one body is without some type of limitation, (Continued)
no one body feels the same every single day. I want people to see the meditative benefits that Yoga has to offer, as well as the loving relationship that yoga allows people to cultivate with their bodies. I want to build a yoga community that inspires, encourages, and enables people to have fun, socialize, and, hopefully, rejuvenate their spirits!
Compared to some other yoga studios, the values of Studio Yogi are unique.

• We honor the tapestry of the human form—the diversity of shapes, ages, figures, and ranges of abilities.
• We believe in the power of an inclusive community—a culture of accessibility, diversity, equity and respect.
• We are committed to individual and collective wellness.

Near the end of 2021 Fresh, Raw & Natural became a nutrient-rich product line produced in the Quarry Shared kitchen,
managed by Chef Sean Myers. Collaborating with Real Men Charities, over 1000 nutritional 2-oz “shots” were
distributed to parents and students at O’Keefe Elementary School and to guests at the Real Men Charities #FridayJazzattheQuarry
sets.

The idea is to ensure that residents become aware that while they may indulge in what looks like a meal, they might
enjoy a stronger, healthier body with innovative approaches provided by Fresh, Raw & Natural, led by nutritionist TS
Douglas. This special collaboration is managed by South Shore resident, Loren Taylor on behalf of Real Men Charities,
and will ensure increased cellular health and nutrition to schools and families.
