Sandra (Sandy) Hall, a Chica-go-area author has created a unique opportunity to celebrate fathers, by collecting over 80 daddy stories, from men, women, and youth (family members, friends, and colleagues), who shared life lessons/gifts received from their daddies. A companion to her last recent book, celebrating mothers; Sandy invited daddy story contributors to share: the most important life lessons/gifts they received FROM their fathers, AS a father and what life lessons/gifts they would like to PASS ON to their children, grandchildren, mentees, etc.
A few snippets of some amazing daddy stories from Fathers R Special Too, Celebrating Daddy N’em follows:
“Yes, from my dad having me count his “tips” I learned a very important life lesson, Money Management 101!
I thank PJ every day for this lesson, one that I have passed on to my daughter, siblings, and other young ones in trying to help them with their taxes and financials.”
(Part of Freddie’s daddy story.)
“I am a more intentional father the more aware I become of the impact my father had on me. I take some of the disappointments I had with my father and reverse them with my children. I wish my father had been more open and honest with me. I wish I knew more about his personal struggles and how he overcame them. So, I practice being appropriately transparent with my sons. I wish my father were better to my mother. So, I try very hard to be considerate and supportive of my sons’ mothers. I’m also deliberate about extending the lessons my father taught his children and taking them to the next level with my children.” (Part of Obari’s daddy story.)
“It’s a gift and a curse that my father wasn’t in my life between the ages of 10 and 17, I was too busy playing sports. He could have shown me how to play basketball, but he didn’t. I went to my neighbors and others (mentors). If my dad was in my life – it might have turned out differently. I have an adult daughter, a 7-year old son that has special needs, and two grandsons (2 and 4 years old). Both my children were and still are very athletic and now so are my grandchildren. I also coach a youth basketball team. I CHOOSE TO BE THERE FOR ALL OF THEM.”
(Part of Deon’s daddy story.)
“Some moments feel like it was only yesterday, and some feel like it was moons ago; they all will stay close in our hearts. We wish we got more time to spend with you but truly happy and thankful for the time we did have. You will always be in our hearts. We love you always.”
